No such thing as an “environmental president”

It is said that power corrupts, but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.

NEWS FLASH: Obama isn’t doing enough for the environment!

Again, I repeat: you were expecting something?

Just as with Copenhagen, this is another example of people thinking that all they have to do is just vote in the right president, and they’re set. Kick back, relax, have a beer, Obama’s gonna save the planet for us. Well, he’s not. No president or politician will. Al Gore definitely won’t. Get your fool head out of the sand…our politicians are often bought and paid for by companies and interests that only care for their profit margins.

Expecting the president or Congress to solve our environmental dilemma is bullshit. If the environmental movement is this concerned, it should be focusing on what it can do: igniting individuals to action, and taking action itself. With the power and exposure the environmental movement has, it should be a piece of cake to expose greenwashing, polluters, and liars.

Of course, the problem with expecting the environmental movement to do this is that one would expect the movement to, you know, pay actual scientists to do actual research. Or actually have the balls to stand up and say “Company X is full of shit and here’s why.” Expecting this from the green movement may be about as flawed as expecting this from the president.

Hopefully that’s not true of the entire movement. But so long as the Sierra Club continues to share its bed with Clorox, I’m not going to get my hopes up.
